Heinz's unit, 2./ I./St.G 76, was renamed as 2nd staffel of the newly created St.G 3, and he participated in the Battle of Britain for a very short duration due to the early banning of all stuka missions to Great Britain. His staffel was stationed in Normandy. He flew missions to Dartmouth, Isle of Wight and Gosport in attacks on ships and airfields.
